Just a few posts ago, I talked about copyright law and clearly lined out why especially as Christians, we should observe that law (well, and most laws-but that's a different post). Since that posting, there's been a little discusssion among some friends. One disagrees with me-which is great, an iron sharpening iron kind of thing.
So I called on a much wiser friend (thanks Luke!) who quickly sent me some great links for you to puruse. The goal here is to give accurate, but easy to read references on this issue.
Go check out Luke's media blog where he explained the copyright law better than I did :)

Thanks so much for the link love!
As for wiser? I highly doubt that. More knowledgeable about media law? I'd better be, since I studied it as part of my major [smile].

I gotta know how one can disagree with what you had to say. I mean I don't want it to be truth, as I have broken this "law" in the past. But just because I don't like it, doesn't make it less of the truth. If I buy a CD, upload it to my computer, and then give away the CD, that's legal, right? Anyway, keep preachin' the truth.
I know Summer, I don't want it to be truth either-I don't have to money for CDs, so I never have new music!
Sorry to say, it's not legal for you to give your CDs away without first destroying your personal copies, such as mp3 downloads, back up CDs or on your computer. Want your CDs back? We've only listened, not copied any of them.
what if I sell it to you for 50 cents? lol actually that's prob. worse, huh?
Uhh, yep-maybe worse, lol. The key here is that if your CDs leave your posession by sale or gift, you are supposed to delete/destroy your copies.
Sorry friend :)
The sad thing is that these copyright laws are there for the wrong reasons. Yes, we've broken quite a few as it would seem (forgive me Lord), but in all honesty, they need to be changed.
Let's face it, the way they explain it, if you buy a friend a copy of a CD you enjoy, then you have to then destroy your copy! That's ludicrious!!
Once you purchase a CD, it should be no body's business what you do with it as it is then your personal property.
That's just my 2 cents.
Love ya' girl!
I agree that the law should be updated, especially as it applies to all the new media we have today. However, until it is changed, we should continue to obey the law as that's biblical.
Jen, unless I misunderstood you, if you bought your CD and then wanted a friend to have one, too and purchased that one, you don't need to destory yours. The point is that you have to pay for both copies, not buy one and duplicate it for your friends.
Hope you have a great day :)
i would also like to add that when you purchase digital media through iTunes or other like services you are often licensed to share that media with multiple computers. For instance, I purchase Chris Tomlin's latest single. I am authorized by iTunes to share that song on up to either 4 or 5 computers I believe plus we can download it to all the phones in our home which means all 4 of the computers in our house plus all 4 cell phones in our house can legally have that song.
Yes, you are right about iTunes-the key here is that all the computers etc are yours...you can't download Chris Tomlin for you and for me :)
Aha - thanks for that clarification.
You know, this is such a great, stimulating topic, Wendy! :-) Really makes you think about what you are doing. Also, kinda reminds us that the law may not always be RIGHT, but it is the LAW, and by GOD'S law, we must obey WORLDLY laws.
Okay, just for arguments sake, Summer has copies of her music and she let you borrow the CD's to listen to and at some point you can return them to her and then reborrow them when you want to listen again. They are not copied by you or given to you, just loaned. That is a legal loophole, is it not?
Yes, D, I think you're right :)
D, you're such a smart cookie! :-)
Is it just me or did that read with sarcasm??? :)
Well, while I certainly use sarcasm-I didn't there...are you saying you can only be called right if it's sarcastic? lol :)
